The Crossroads:
Modernising Guest Room Experience Without Interrupting Guests
Imagine upgrading every guestroom in a fully occupied luxury hotel, replacing lighting controls, cabling, switches and indicators across 46 rooms while maintaining five-star service and ensuring guests never notice a thing. That was the challenge HSC Systems took on at Hemingways Nairobi in early 2026.
The result: a smarter, more intuitive room experience for guests, sharper operational visibility for hotel staff, and a project delivered on schedule all without a single service disruption.

The Challenge
An Ageing Control System in a Premium Environment
Hemingways Nairobi holds a reputation as one of Kenya’s finest luxury properties. When the existing guestroom control system began to fall short of the guest experience its team wanted to deliver, a modernisation project became a priority.
The objectives were to improve lighting control so guests could intuitively set the right ambience; give hotel staff clearer real-time visibility of room status; and create a stronger foundation for energy management across all guestrooms. In some rooms, cabling infrastructure also needed to be updated to support the new design.
The added complexity was that the hotel would remain fully operational throughout, meaning every decision, every installation and every adjustment had to be made around real guests in real rooms.

How We Delivered
Installing Room by Room, Around a Busy, Fully Operational Hotel
Delivering a project like this inside a fully operational five-star hotel demands a different kind of discipline. Room availability shifted daily based on occupancy, meaning the team could not follow a fixed installation sequence. HSC structured the project around what the hotel could release, not what was easiest.
When a block of rooms became available, additional technicians were deployed to accelerate progress. When access was limited, the team focused on preparation: cabling adjustments, testing, and staging work that could be completed away from occupied rooms. Not a single day of installation downtime was wasted.

The installation was structured entirely around Hemingways Nairobi’s operational rhythm: flexibility and preparation were built into the project from day one.

Daniel Kinyua, Project Manager HSC Systems Limited
"The success of this project came from teamwork and flexibility. We had to align with the hotel’s operations, adjust our schedule when needed and still deliver the quality expected in a premium hospitality environment. Says Daniel.

Future Ready by Design
Designed to Deliver Value Today While Creating a Clear Pathway to a Full GRMS Tomorrow.
While this project focused on intelligent guest room lighting control, the solution was designed with future expansion in mind. The platform supports expanded guest room automation, enabling capabilities such as air-conditioning control, occupancy-based automation, energy management, and additional room controls.
This gives Hemingways Nairobi a clear pathway to further enhance the guest experience while improving operational efficiency and reducing energy consumption as future requirements evolve.
